Harbour Eye 2 (February 2004)

http://www.harboureye.co.uk (no longer live)

Description

A revised version of the original Harbour Eye site. I built this with more advertising potential (click through buttons, banner rotation on all pages and ticker text) and a more exciting design. The site also has a second camera, looking across Gunwharf and to the Spinnaker Tower (at that time under construction). This new site managed over 25,000 page impressions in the first 5 days of going live and these figures carried on being the average rate of traffic while the site was live. Unfortunately when Fullers (large, national brewery) bought out Gales (small, family run, local brewery), sponsoring this site wasn't something they were too interested in and eventually it shut down.

Technical

Once again, Oggle provided the video streaming Java applet and camera equipment. The site was flat HTML and hosted on an Oggle Unix server. The banners, buttons, ticker, hit counter etc. were all been built using ASP.Net which were managed from The News centre - meaning they had local control over the advertising content. These weree then included in the flat site as a Javascript call or a simple pointing to our .NET server. To cope with demand, I load tested all the ASP.Net content and maximised the throughput through our SQL server (providing the advertising data). At one point, when the Ark Royal entered the harbour, 1000 people were viewing the site simultaneously. Although load on the server peaked slightly, it performed perfectly!
