JSWEC 2007 web site design and build (Dec 2006 - August 2007)
http://www.jswec.co.uk/2007old/
Description
JSWEC is a yearly residential conference catering for Social Work educators and service users. The web site is used to book delegate places at the conference, submit abstracts and also provide travel and programme information. The booking system has been carried over from the previous JSWEC 2007 site and integrates with the SWAP crm system. Online abstract submission is also reused from the the previous site with minor amendments to cater for the dual conference and extended number of abstract themes. Places both for delegates and presenters are always oversubscribed for this conference and the web site carries the load perfectly.

Technical
The site has been built using Dreamweaver 8. As with my recent work I was keen to avoid using tables for enforcing layout and also to produce a nice clean stylesheet. Usability is a large factor in the success of the online systems like abstract submission and delegate booking and these were tested prior to going live. As a result of this testing some wording and explanations were changed and added to the site to make the whole process easier and more intuitive for the user.
Using an Access backend (running on the same web server) would not be my first choice from a performance point of view but this could not be avoided (much of the backend code is carried over from previous versions of the site). Despite this it handles a large volume of traffic very well.
